Aftercare for facial piercings.

Suggested aftercare guidelines
Your fresh piercing will not heal on its own. 95 % of the healing depends on your effort of taking care of it properly. To give your fresh piercing the best chance to heal, it is important to take proper care of it. Continuous cleaning with a good aftercare product is essential.

Our experience tells us that most problems during healing are caused by:

1. That you or someone else touches your piercing with unwashed hands.

2. That you played with your jewelry or changed jewelry too soon.

3. That you used an aftercare product/method that does not suit you or mixed different aftercare products/methods.

4. That you haven't cleaned your piercing enough.

Avoid environments such as swimming pools, sun beds and saunas for the first few weeks. Also avoid doing a fresh piercing if you are planning to travel within the coming two months.

The healthier your lifestyle is, the easier it will be for your piercing to heal. You should never get a new piercing if you are feeling unwell or have a cold. If you notice that your piercing is getting irritated by something, then stop doing just that for a while. Listen to your body.

Regardless of jewelry and aftercare product, all piercings can migrate. If you experience discomfort or think that something is wrong, please contact us at Tribe.

Other things to keep in mind
Leave jewelry in at all times! Even healed piercings that you have had for years can shrink or close in minutes. If removed, reinsertion can be difficult or impossible.

Always avoid sleeping on your piercing during the healing period, it prolongs healing, and can cause the piercing to shift in angle.

Follow-up
You are always welcome to return at any time for a follow-up or if you have questions during the healing period. This is of course free of charge.

Ear, facial and below the neck
You need: Easy piercing or NeilMed piercing spray.

Spray directly on the piercing and let air dry. Make sure that both entry and exit holes are covered. Spray 4-6 times daily until the piercing is completely healed.

Do not use q-tips or fingers to apply the spray or to clean the jewelry.

Change to clean bedding/sheets and avoid tight clothing over your newly made piercing. Maintain cleanliness of telephones, headphones, eyeglasses, helmets, hats, and anything that contacts the pierced area.

With clean hands or paper products, be sure to regularly check threaded and threadless ends on your jewelry for tightness.

Lip

It is important to downsize the labret after about two months to avoid damaging teeth and gums.

With clean hands or paper products, be sure to regularly check threaded and threadless ends on your jewelry for tightness.

Tongue and smiley
You need: Easy piercing mouthwash.

Avoid hot beverages, spicy food, chewing gum, alcohol, tobacco, and other things that can irritate your mouth during healing, especially during the first week. Avoid oral contact (wet kisses, etc.) during healing.

Rinse your mouth with five milliliters of Easy piercing mouthwash diluted with fifteen milliliters of water, morning and evening after brushing your teeth. Use Easy piercing mouthwash until the bottle is finished.

It is important to downsize the barbell after about two to six weeks to avoid damaging teeth and gums.

With clean hands or paper products, be sure to regularly check threaded and threadless ends on your jewelry for tightness.

During healing floss daily, and gently brush your teeth, tongue and jewelry. Once healed, brush the jewelry more thoroughly to avoid plaque build up.

Dermal anchor and skin diver
You need: Easy piercing or NeilMed piercing spray.

Have the anchor/skin diver covered with plaster/band aid the first two weeks to avoid getting caught in clothes, hair etc. Then have it taped at night for another two weeks.

Clean 2-3 times daily by placing a compress over your anchor/skindiver and soak it with spray. Leave the wet compress for 3-5 minutes.

These piercings require maintenance during their entire lifetime because matter can build up underneath the threaded top causing the piercing to become irritated. Saline and/or shower rinses may be helpful with removing matter from underneath the threaded top.

Avoid putting makeup on these piercings even after healing.

Even with proper care, surface anchors may be less permanent than other body piercings.

Saline solution
Warm saline is a great compliment för helping your body with the healing process. It opens up the pores and increases circulation, which helps the healing process.

Dissolve 1 teaspoon of iodine-free sea salt into one litre of warm water. A stronger solution can irritate your piercing, so don’t put in too much salt.

Soak for 15-20 minutes once per day. Seal a cup of warm saline solution over the area. For some piercings it will be easier to use clean gauze or paper towels soaked in saline solution. Rinse after you salt soak, because dried salt crystals could hurt you and your piercing.

You will get the best effect if you repeat this every day for a week or according to our recommendation. Make a new solution every time.

Frequently asked questions
How long should I clean my piercing?
You should clean your piercing until it is completely healed. A piercing may seem just fine before the whole healing process is done. This is because they heal from the outside in. Even if it feels fine, the new tissue is weak on the inside. Be patient, and keep cleaning all the way to the end of entire healing period.

Will a fresh piercing affect my work out?
Avoid heavy work outs the first week to avoid unnecessary bleeding . Avoid friction and pressure against your fresh piercing. Listen to your body, if something feels uncomfortable for your piercing, avoid it.

Can I add other aftercare products to speed up healing?
No, in order for us to be able to help you in the best way, it is important that you follow our aftercare guidelines. Avoid cleaning with alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, antibacterial soaps, iodine, or any harsh products, as these can damage cells. Also avoid ointments as they prevent necessary air circulation.

Could I get an infection?
If you have had your piercing done at Tribe and if you follow our aftercare guidelines, the risk of infection is minimal. In case of infection, the body is generally affected, including fever. There is a big difference between infection and irritation. Irritation, redness and swelling are common during healing and are completely harmless.

If complications arise during healing, do not remove the jewelry. Contact us so we can help you.

Do you use piercing guns?
No! Professional piercers never uses piercing guns for any type of piercing under any circumstances. While piercing guns may seem to be a quick, easy and convenient way of creating holes, they have major drawbacks in terms of sterility, tissue damage and inappropriate jewelry design.
